CASPer Prep
Training is essential for the mandatory online situational personality test.
The CASPer test has become a mandatory gatekeeping requirement at a growing number of Canadian medical schools. It is a timed, online situational judgement test that measures behavioural tendencies — how you think through ethical dilemmas, how you communicate under pressure, and how you demonstrate empathy and equity. Without structured preparation, even academically strong students can score poorly and be screened out before their GPA or MCAT is ever considered.
What the CASPer Test Actually Tests
The CASPer is a 100–120 minute online assessment divided into two sections: a typed section and a video-response section. Each section presents realistic hypothetical scenarios — often involving ethical tensions, team conflict, or patient interactions — and asks you to reason through them in real time. Schools receive a percentile score, and many will not advance applicants who fall below the 75th percentile.
Collaboration
How you work with and support others in difficult situations

How sensitively you navigate issues of fairness and human dignity

How We Prep Our Students
- 1
Test Format Breakdown
Your first session demystifies the CASPer structure — format, timing, scoring rubric, and what evaluators are actually looking for in strong versus weak responses.
- 2
Strategy & Framework Training
Your mentor teaches proven response frameworks for ethical dilemmas, interpersonal conflicts, and role-play stations — strategies that hold up under time pressure.
- 3
Timed Practice Scenarios
You write or record responses to realistic mock scenarios drawn from past-style prompts. Your mentor provides detailed, line-by-line feedback on content, structure, and tone.
- 4
Video Section Coaching
The verbal component trips many students. Your mentor coaches you on pacing, eye contact, filler words, and how to project warmth and confidence on camera.
- 5
Final Mock Simulation
A full-length, timed simulation under test-day conditions, followed by a debrief session to consolidate lessons before your actual test date.
Common CASPer Mistakes We Correct
Picking a side immediately without acknowledging the nuance in the scenario
Running out of time and submitting incomplete responses
Giving generic answers that could apply to any situation
Focusing on what you would 'report' rather than how you would actually handle the moment
Neglecting the video component and performing significantly worse verbally than in writing
Failing to demonstrate self-awareness or acknowledge personal limitations
Expected Outcomes
Students who complete GritGoals CASPer prep consistently report feeling more composed and structured on test day. The goal is not to memorize answers — scenarios are unpredictable — but to internalize a reliable framework so you can think clearly under pressure regardless of what appears on screen.
- →A clear, repeatable response framework for any scenario type
- →Significantly improved comfort with both the typed and verbal sections
- →Actionable, scenario-specific feedback to sharpen your reasoning
- →Realistic expectations about test-day pacing and what to do if you fall behind
- →A meaningful improvement in response quality and depth from first to final practice session
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions do I need to prepare for CASPer?↓
Most students complete 2–4 sessions, depending on their starting comfort level. We recommend booking your first session at least 3 weeks before your test date to allow time for practice between sessions.
Which Canadian medical schools require the CASPer test?↓
Requirements change year to year, but CASPer is currently required by schools including University of Ottawa, McMaster, Dalhousie, and others. Your mentor will confirm which schools on your list require it during your intake session.
Is the CASPer the same as an MMI?↓
They share a similar philosophy — situational judgement — but differ in format. CASPer is written and recorded online, taken independently before application review. MMIs are live, in-person interview stations conducted after you receive an interview invite.
Can I improve my CASPer score after already writing it once?↓
Yes. Many reapplicants improve their CASPer score substantially with focused preparation. Your mentor will diagnose what held you back in previous attempts and target those specific areas.
